Made to Measure on Shopify: How Surahi Lets Customers Order a Perfect Fit

In short: Surahi’s hand-embroidered kurta sets are stitched for each customer. We replaced a single “Personalized size” text box with a proper Made to Measure experience: 9 measurements, a how-to-measure guide on every field, tailor notes and clear delivery options — on a normal Shopify product page.

The problem with one text box

Custom tailoring is Surahi’s strength, but online it was hidden behind one free-text field. Customers didn’t know which measurements to give or how to measure, so the team confirmed sizes on WhatsApp before cutting fabric. For a ₹15,000+ couture piece, that uncertainty costs sales.

What we built

  1. A clear fit toggle. Standard Size or Made to Measure, right where size used to be.
  2. Nine measurements, in inches. Height, shoulder, bust, waist, hip, sleeve length, bicep, kurta/top length and bottom length — in a clean two-column grid.
  3. How to measure, per field. A tape icon beside each box opens a short guide for that exact measurement.
  4. Notes for the tailor. “Relaxed fit, sleeves till the elbow” — the personal touch couture clients expect.
  5. Delivery choice. Standard (ready in 15 days, included) or Express (10 days, + ₹3,400), priced before checkout.

Design details that matter

  • Inches everywhere, one unit, so karigars never convert.
  • Guides in context — the help opens next to the field, not on another page.
  • Mobile-first layout: fields stay readable and tappable on a phone, where most fashion traffic lands.

Made to Measure is also promoted on collection pages — “Tailored to your measurements”.

Why it is rare

Most Indian ethnic-wear stores offer standard sizes or a single text box. Doing what a boutique tailor does — guided measurements, notes and a delivery choice — on a regular Shopify product page, without a separate app or a phone call, is still uncommon.

FAQ

What does Made to Measure mean on Surahi?

On a Surahi product page the shopper can switch from Standard Size to Made to Measure, enter 9 body measurements in inches, add notes for the tailor and choose Standard or Express delivery. Karigars then cut and stitch the piece to those measurements.

Which measurements are needed?

Height, shoulder, bust, waist, hip, sleeve length, bicep, kurta/top length and bottom length — all in inches.

How do customers know how to measure?

Each field has a tape icon that opens a guide for that specific measurement, so customers measure correctly without leaving the page.
