Selling Online in India: Designing for COD, Trust and Fewer Returns

In short: Indian shoppers buying from a new brand ask three questions — Is this real? Will it arrive? What if I don’t like it? Good e-commerce design answers all three before checkout, and treats COD as a design decision, not just a payment setting.
1. Look established from the first screen
- A clear brand story and real photography, not stock images.
- Reviews and ratings visible on home and product pages.
- Contact options that people actually use: WhatsApp and a phone number.

2. Design COD on purpose
Cash on delivery lowers the risk for a first-time buyer, but unconfirmed COD orders are where many returns start. A few design patterns help:
- Show COD availability by pincode on the product page, so nobody is surprised at checkout.
- Nudge prepaid with a small, clear benefit (a discount or faster dispatch) instead of hiding COD.
- Confirm COD orders on WhatsApp or by call before shipping, and make it easy to cancel.
3. Promise delivery dates, not “5–7 working days”
“Get it by Friday” is more convincing than a range. Show it by pincode next to the buy button, then repeat it in the cart and confirmation.
4. Make policies easy to find and easy to read
Returns, exchanges and refunds in plain language, linked right beside the price. A policy hidden in the footer feels like a trap; a policy next to the button feels like confidence.
5. Reduce “not what I expected” returns
- Photos at real scale and in real light.
- Size guides — or custom sizing, like Surahi’s Made to Measure.
- Guided choice for uncertain buyers, like Satv Aura’s Crystal Expert.
6. Keep the conversation after the order
Order confirmation, dispatch and delivery updates on WhatsApp keep buyers reassured — and reduce the “where is my order?” calls that block your team.
A simple trust checklist
| Area | What to show |
|---|---|
| Home | Brand story, reviews, WhatsApp |
| Product page | Delivery date by pincode, COD availability, returns, photo reviews |
| Cart | All charges upfront, prepaid benefit |
| After order | WhatsApp confirmation and tracking |
Our client stores — Shwetara, Dear Muscles, Satv Aura and Kapimuni — together take 1,050+ orders a day. If you want the same foundations on your store, see our Shopify service.
FAQ
Should an Indian D2C store offer cash on delivery?
For many categories, COD helps first-time buyers trust a new brand. Many stores keep COD but nudge prepaid with a small benefit, and confirm COD orders before shipping to reduce returns.
What is RTO in e-commerce?
RTO (return to origin) is when a shipped order is not delivered — often refused at the door or unreachable — and comes back to the seller, costing shipping both ways.
Which trust signals matter most for Indian shoppers?
Clear delivery dates, a visible return policy, real customer reviews with photos, a reachable WhatsApp or phone number, and familiar payment options.
